Internet Marketing is Business, not Just Search Engine Algorithms

internet marketing
Not two weeks ago I had a chat with someone (an SEO) about some online media buying and although the figures made an infinite amount of sense (6 figure monthly page views – prime location banner purchase for less than £90 per month!), he said, “but there is no SEO value from the banner link” (it was JavaScript)! Astonished, I spent the next hour arguing the case for buying the coverage, but it would seem that the majority of SEOs just don’t see the value of applying traditional marketing techniques to the web – they just don’t “fit” into the SEO mindset.

What is really bizarre though is that while the optimisation industry doesn’t see the value in some less search engine focused marketing techniques, they will pay a veritable fortune for paid links. The likes of ReviewMe (http://www.reviewme.com) change up to $250 for a single “review” (which is SEO speak for a plain text link not so subtly hidden in a purpose written article). One text link. One! Not just that, but a single text link on a new page that has no PR (and will maybe only will ever receive minimal PR filtered through from other page links)!

For that $250 (around £150) there are so many different options you could aim for. While a lot won’t have any direct SEO benefit, we still need to consider traffic and branding benefits.

$250 would allow me to buy banner advertising on a niche site / forum / blog for a limited amount of time. Depending on the type of site and its subject area you could be looking at a decent amount of traffic, enquiries and exposure – certainly enough to justify the cost.

An alternative would be to spend the money on a directory listing on a site such as TheBestOf (http://www.thebestof.co.uk) – £10 per month for a year and you get a full page listing (written by your local contact), an audio advert where you can pitch your service, inclusion in a high traffic site and a direct (SEO friendly!) link back to your site. A link AND qualified traffic – that’s like SEO Christmas!

Online marketing professionals do focus on SEO a lot and that isn’t a bad thing – it just isn’t the only thing and you should be looking to spend your budget wisely and spread your marketing scope.

Flash to the rescue!

Business 1 Comment

My buddy Damian is freakin’ out a bit.
He did a cool video with Frank Kern
recently about the importance of mentors.

It’s a good video but his page was getting
a fairly low optin rate. So, we tweaked some
things and now there is a cool new full-Flash
page that I built.

So far, the optin rate is almost double from the
low he had. Woohoo! Flash saves the day once
again!

Check it out here and let me know what you think:
Super cool Flash page featuring Frank and Damian

BEWARE!!! iContact is NOT a friend to affiliate marketers!

Hello all,
Check this response to a “review” of my iContact account. Keep in mind that they asked where I generated my list and I showed them this blog and the optin forms I have here. (They didn’t know where I built my list even though I use their own optin forms to do so. Huh?)

This was their response after “reviewing” my site.

“Hello Matt,

MLM and network/affiliate marketing present an unique set of challenges for us. Many pyramid schemes try to present themselves as legitimate MLM businesses. In the most legitimate MLM companies, commissions are earned on sales of the company’s products or services and not recruiting alone. Company products/services should be tangible goods or services outside of the MLM model, meaning that books or CDs that explain the MLM system do not qualify as a tangible good in the view of iContact.

After reviewing your web site and the message history of your account we have come to the conclusion that we can no longer provide service to your account. The model of your business closely resembles that of a pyramid model, in which as you have admitted, no tangible goods or services are provided. The affiliate marketing systems you site promotes only mentions profit potential through recruiting and again, contains no mention of any physical product line.

You will have seven days to collect your contact data. We wish you the best in your future business endeavors.

MLM. Network marketing. Recruiting. WHAT!!!???

How stupid can you be!!??? Where in the hell on my site is there anything about MLM, network marketing, or recruiting???

The funny part is that they have an affiliate program themselves but they don’t understand what affiliate marketing even is! According to them, what I do is a pyramid scheme because I don’t ship physical products! How ludicrous is that!!??

By that definition, their own service is a pyramid scheme. Really, really stupid.

I used to sign high praises for iContact. But after this action and talking to other internet marketers that have had problems with them, I have to warn very strongly against using them. They have no clue about marketing!

I can’t say enough about this. USE AN EMAIL SERVICE PROVIDER THAT UNDERSTANDS MARKETING! iContact obviously does not.

Stay away. Cancel your account if you have one.

Talk soon,
Matt
